North Korea May Deploy 50,000 Troops to Russia, Fires Missile

North Korea may increase its troop deployment to western Russia to 50,000 by the end of November, according to Ukraine's military intelligence agency.

This aims to free up Russian units for the front lines and help seize Ukraine's eastern Donbas region by year-end. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Russia wanted an additional 30,000 North Korean troops in late July, later adding Pyongyang decided on 30,000 to 50,000 North Koreans. South Korean intelligence estimates around 6,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in Ukraine.

Russia is again using North Korea's KN-23 missile to strike Ukraine after a months-long pause, with two recent strikes on July 30 in Kryvyi Rih and Tuesday in Zaporizhzhia. The KN-23 missile used on July 30 traveled off course by roughly 15 kilometers and killed an entire family, according to Maj. Gen. Vadym Skibitskyi. Col. Yurii Ihnat, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson, described the KN-23 as a North Korean copy of the Russian 9K720 Iskander.

Russia and North Korea signed a defense pact in the summer of 2024. On Wednesday, North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the sea off the Korean peninsula's east coast, its 11th suspected ballistic missile test in 2026. The missile flew about 700 km. This launch occurred days ahead of major joint military exercises by Seoul and Washington, dubbed Ulchi Freedom Shield, set for August 17-27.

North Korea's foreign ministry criticized Seoul's nuclear submarine plans, calling it a step toward nuclear armament. South Korea's foreign ministry pushed back on this claim.
