NYC Mayor Mamdani Pledges $43 Million to Fix Childcare Payment Delays

Mayor Zohran Mamdani pledged $43 million on Monday to address payment delays impacting the city's free childcare program for 2-year-olds. The delays threatened the program's rollout before the school year begins. Mamdani's administration also filed a lawsuit on August 19 to prevent the enactment of the "RESPECT Check Act," a bill passed unanimously by the New York City Council in July. This act would provide up to a $10,000 bonus to education paraprofessionals, such as teachers' aides and instructional assistants. Mamdani contends the bill violates the state's Taylor Law, which protects public employees' rights to negotiate compensation. The United Federation of Teachers, which endorsed Mamdani in the 2025 mayoral race, filed a motion on August 25 to intervene in the litigation. The union argues Mamdani is blocking a city-backed pay raise for paraprofessionals, who assist students with disabilities and earn between $33,000 and $56,000 annually. Mamdani stated he supports the pay raise but prefers it be negotiated through collective bargaining. Separately, actor Amadeo Fusca won a Zohran Mamdani look-alike contest that drew hundreds, with Fusca receiving $100. One participant in a similar contest involving nine look-alikes claimed it was rigged.
