A British Airways flight bound for Chicago from London was forced to turn back on Monday after the aircraft experienced a dramatic descent of more than 28,000 feet within minutes.

Approximately an hour into its journey, while flying over Ireland, the aircraft reached an altitude of 37,000 feet before developing a technical issue. The pilots declared a general emergency by transmitting a squawk code 7700, and the aircraft rapidly descended to an altitude of 9,000 feet in roughly seven minutes. A British Airways spokesperson stated that the safety of customers and crew is always a top priority, and the aircraft landed safely back at Heathrow after the highly trained pilots returned due to a technical issue. Customers disembarked the aircraft normally, and teams are working to rebook their travel plans. The incident involved a Boeing 777-236ER with registration G-VIIA.
