London Vigil Honors Former Cambridge Professor Jason Arday

Former Cambridge professor Jason Arday died at the age of 41 on Friday, August 14, in Battersea, London.

British police stated his death was unexpected but not suspicious. Thousands of Britons gathered in Trafalgar Square, London, on Monday, August 17, for a vigil to mourn his passing. Organizers asked attendees to wear black and bring flowers, with around 2,000 people showing up, including Labour MP Diane Abbott and filmmaker Misan Harriman. Harriman stated the legacy media crossed every line in the treatment of Jason, while Abbott said the campaign was led by people who didn’t believe a black man should be a Cambridge professor.

Arday, who became Cambridge's youngest ever black professor in 2023, resigned on August 5 from his post as professor of sociology of education after multiple plagiarism accusations. In a public resignation letter, he stated he had reached the limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure. His family denounced a campaign of sustained abuse since his 2023 appointment and asked the press to stop the campaign of harassment.

An online fundraising page created by racial equality campaigner Patrick Vernon to support Arday's family had raised over £163,000 ($218,000) by Monday afternoon. A petition demanding a public inquiry into the media coverage had gathered over 83,000 signatures. Chris Smith, the University of Cambridge's chancellor, condemned a racist feeding frenzy prompted by the plagiarism claims, stating it was right to refuse to join in.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, a Cambridge alumnus, called Arday's death a tragedy on so many levels. Press regulator IPSO is reviewing a high volume of complaints and concerns over newspaper coverage, with Newscord reporting over 199,000 emails sent to IPSO. The allegations of plagiarism were first made by Nathan Cofnas, a self-described race realist and American philosopher who questioned Arday's background and achievements.

Cofnas, who was an academic at Cambridge, is critical of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and believes intelligence varies by ethnic background. Arday had disputed the allegations against him. He was diagnosed with autism and other developmental difficulties as a child.
