Film director Michael Mann sustained a superficial leg injury after a firearm accidentally discharged while he holstered it at a Los Angeles shooting club on Saturday.

Los Angeles police officers and fire department personnel responded around 4 p.m. to a radio report of shots fired at The Range LA, a members-only shooting venue in West Los Angeles. Responding officers determined that the discharge was accidental, found no indication of an intent to inflict self-harm, and cleared the location after filing an injury report.

Paramedics transported the 83-year-old filmmaker by ambulance to a local hospital in stable condition. A spokesperson for Mann stated on Sunday morning that the weapon discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial, subcutaneous wound, and confirmed that he received medical treatment and was being released. Police accounts and representatives noted that Mann has practiced target shooting for several decades.

The weapon involved in the discharge was a.45-caliber handgun. The venue charges annual membership dues ranging from $2,000 to $5,400. Mann has directed feature films including Thief in 1981, Manhunter in 1986, Heat in 1995, Collateral in 2004, Miami Vice in 2006, and Ferrari in 2023. He is currently preparing production on a film adaptation of Heat 2, based on the 2022 novel he co-authored with Meg Gardiner.
