New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a multimillion-dollar strategy to combat antisemitism, drawing criticism from prominent Jewish leaders who stated the plan avoids addressing anti-Israel rhetoric as a driver of hate.

The administration announced what it called the nation's first municipal strategy dedicated to combating antisemitism, with Mamdani declaring Jewish New Yorkers should feel cherished and celebrated in the most Jewish city in America. The plan includes a $26 million increase in hate crime prevention funding, $6.4 million for community organizations, and $2 million for the Queens Holocaust Memorial Garden.

However, major Jewish organizations, including the UJA-Federation of New York and the Anti-Defamation League, issued joint statements criticizing the strategy. They argued that the plan fails to address the mayor's own rhetoric demonizing Israel, which they contend inevitably leads to the targeting of Jewish New Yorkers. The Anti-Defamation League noted that nearly 40% of antisemitic incidents recorded in the city since Mamdani took office were related to Israel.

Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch told JNS that ignoring the connection between anti-Zionism and Jew-hatred is a big evasion. The Israeli consul general in New York, Ofir Akunis, stated that money can't buy values and that the mayor's language against the Jewish state is the fundamental reason for rising antisemitism. Mamdani also hosted Rabbi Yaacov Behrman in his sukkah on September 29, an event documented by City Hall, hours after releasing the strategy.
