India-US Trade Deal Nears Finalization, Envoy Says

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor indicated that the India-US trade deal is progressing and nearing finalization, with negotiations being reworked following a US Supreme Court ruling.

Gor stated that the deal is progressing and that the two sides remain close to reaching an agreement. He also suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be a priority meeting for President Donald Trump at the G20 Summit in Miami, Florida, from December 14 to 15, 2026. Gor hinted that Modi's visit would involve more than just a group meeting, noting Trump considers Modi a friend.

He also suggested Trump might visit India again next year, recalling his 2020 visit fondly. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal previously stated that negotiations on the India-US free trade agreement have concluded, with the two sides fine-tuning the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement. Goyal indicated India awaits the United States to provide necessary details, specifically preferential tariff terms.

Gor referred to Goyal as a favorite and mentioned that as long as Prime Minister Modi is present, India can rely on the United States.
