Iranian Drones Target Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister's Office

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the drone attack on the office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party leader on Monday, posting on X/Twitter that “Kurdish friends” should be aware of “false-flag ploys.”

Araghchi stated that such ploys aim to “sow discord between neighbors.” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismaeil Baqaei doubled down on Araghchi's statements, describing the attack as “highly suspicious” and indicating Iraqi intelligence was holding groups responsible for “sinister plots.” Two Hadid-110 drones targeted the office of Masrour Barzani, the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) prime minister, and the home of the region's intelligence chief in northern Iraq on Monday.

The KRG security agency announced the attack was launched from Iranian territory. Security analyst Roger Macmillan stated that the Iranian officials' response was lacking, noting the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service named the munition type and launch origin inside Iranian territory. No casualties were reported in the attack. Masrour Barzani condemned the drone attack. The Iraqi Prime Minister ordered a probe into the attack, noting it was launched from the “Iranian side.”

The US, UK, and EU condemned the drone attack on PM Barzani's office. The attack also targeted the intelligence chief's residence in Erbil. The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit conducted an investigation.
