Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Federal Stalking Charges in CEO Killing
The Story
Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on Friday in Manhattan federal court to federal stalking charges and admitted to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024.
Mangione, 28, admitted he stalked and shot Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel as the executive was heading to an investor conference. He told the judge he used a 3-D printer to make part of a gun and traveled to New York with the intent to shoot Thompson. Mangione stated, "I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died."
He also said, "I knew what I was doing was illegal." Prosecutors plan to seek a life sentence at his sentencing on December 18. Mangione's lawyers have filed paperwork seeking to have the parallel state murder charges dropped, citing New York's double jeopardy protections. The state trial is scheduled to begin September 8. Mangione previously pleaded not guilty to both federal and state charges. Thompson's family called the plea an important step toward justice.
