The Story
Kazakhstan’s new unicameral parliament met for the first time on August 28 and elected Aibek Dadebay as its speaker, or chair. Dadebay, leader of the Adilet party, was President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s pick, and the choice almost unanimously fell on him. Separately, Erlan Karin was elected vice president of Kazakhstan on August 31. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev appointed Karin, a longtime adviser, as vice president under the new constitution. This appointment makes Karin first in line to succeed the president. The Kurultai also backed Olzhas Bektenov to remain as prime minister, filling two of the country’s most senior posts.
