An explosion involving unexploded ordnance killed a student and injured 24 others during a school trip in northern Israel on Monday, officials said.

The Israeli military stated the munition was believed to be an unexploded cluster munition from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, left in the area along Israel's northern border with Lebanon. The incident occurred near Mitzpe Be’er and Ramim Ridge during an annual school trip for ORT Ma'alot Yeshiva High School students. One 14-year-old student, Eitan Masouri, injured by shrapnel, told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that a fellow student was handling the ordnance before it detonated, unscrewing it.

A preliminary investigation by the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority showed evidence that a student put the munition into his bag. Magen David Adom rescue service reported two people were seriously injured, and the ambulance service stated 22 boys, 2 seriously, and 2 adults were injured. Magen David Adom received the emergency call at 2:53 p.m. and dispatched 14 ambulances and three rescue helicopters.

Prime Minister Netanyahu met with victims at Haifa's Rambam Health Care Campus and instructed the Home Front Command to emphasize warnings against touching unexploded ordnance. The Education Ministry announced group trips to the Israel-Lebanon border area on Tuesday and Wednesday would be diverted. Defense Minister Israel Katz said the blast is under investigation. The area is described as littered with explosive devices from Israel's conflict with Hezbollah. Lebanese authorities are monitoring the incident through Israeli media reports, with a Lebanese military source stating no Lebanese army presence was near the site.
