Jackie the bald eagle dies after illness and attack

Jackie, a bald eagle who became an internet sensation, has died after battling an illness.

Her caretakers announced her death on Monday, August 11, 2026. Jackie, who was 14 years old, had been receiving treatment at a veterinary facility for weeks. She had been injured approximately one month prior to her death during a fight with two other eagles. Jackie and her mate, Shadow, gained worldwide fame during the COVID-19 pandemic, with nature lovers watching their nest via an online video feed for over a decade.

Her life entranced people in California and beyond, and she became a symbol of the species' recovery in the state. Friends of Big Bear Valley are mourning her passing. The Ojai Raptor Center in California cared for Jackie for her last three weeks.
