Jamal Musiala Collapses Again, Diagnosed With Treatable Neurological Absence Seizures

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala collapsed on the pitch for the second time in four days during a friendly match against Heidenheim on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Germany international went down eight minutes after entering the game as a substitute. Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala as he received medical treatment before being helped from the field. The incident followed a similar collapse against RB Leipzig a few days earlier. Musiala later announced on Instagram that he has been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures caused by a neurological dysfunction.

He stated he is receiving excellent medical treatment and remains very optimistic. Doctors have informed him there is no additional health risk. Bayern sources told dpa that Musiala's career is not considered to be at risk, and there is no evidence preventing him from continuing to play at the highest level. His involvement in both recent matches was discussed extensively with doctors and considered unproblematic.

Absence seizures, once known as petit mal seizures, can cause a person to stop activity and appear to switch off for 10 to 20 seconds, sometimes with upward eye movement or fluttering. Atypical cases may last longer and include chewing or repetitive blinking. Musiala previously endured a broken fibula and severe ankle damage in July 2025, which kept him out for about six months. Bayern is scheduled to face Borussia Dortmund in the German Supercup on Saturday.
