BRICS Summit Convenes in Delhi Amid Global Conflicts and Economic Challenges
The Story
Global leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, have arrived in New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled for September 12-13.
The summit, hosted by India under its 2026 BRICS Chairship with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” is expected to focus on global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine, and economic challenges. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence in positive and meaningful discussions for global welfare. Security measures in Delhi are extensive, with 15,000 police personnel and 200 paramilitary companies deployed, and traffic restrictions in place.
President Xi's attendance marks his first visit to India since 2019, signaling a cautious thaw in relations following a 2020 military clash. Iranian President Pezeshkian stated BRICS was established to counter unilateralism and highlighted pressure on his country. The summit brings together the 11-member BRICS nations: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the UAE. Discussions are anticipated to cover global trade turbulence and oil prices. The summit follows the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit earlier in September.
