Ukrainian Charged with Murder in Polish Abbey Stabbing
The Story
A 31-year-old Ukrainian national, identified as Ihor M. The attack on September 24 resulted in the death of one priest, Stanisław Zboinowicz, and injuries to four others, including three clergy members and two laypeople.
One injured priest remains in serious condition after surgeries, while the other two victims are stable and have been discharged. The suspect, who is under police supervision and awaiting medical assessments for questioning, faces a potential life sentence. According to preliminary information, Ihor M. arrived in Poland from Germany and was unable to cross the border due to issues with his car's insurance.
He reportedly went to the abbey to retrieve his car and took a knife from the monastery kitchen, attacking people inside the retreat center. The motive for the attack remains unknown. The ambassador to Poland stated that attacks on Ukrainians in Poland have risen by approximately 30% in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, with more incidents classified as hate crimes.
