Two Dead, Hundreds Evacuated as Wildfires Sweep Greek Island

The Story

Two people died and hundreds were evacuated from the Greek island of Salamina on Sunday as fast-moving wildfires spread across the island. The victims were found in the village of Peristeria, where strong winds fueled the blaze. An operation was underway to evacuate residents from the areas of Kolones and Saterli. By Sunday evening, Greek media reported that about 500 people had been evacuated by sea and one of the fires was under control. Two fires broke out almost simultaneously on Sunday afternoon, with the first reported at 14:40 local time near the island's south coast and a second fire emerging about 20 minutes later in the east. The cause of the fires is not yet known. Firefighters deployed to the island included about 200 personnel, supported by aircraft, fire engines, water tankers, and construction machinery. At least 10 other people suffered burns or symptoms of smoke inhalation, with five taken for local treatment. Two coast guard vessels and a fire department vessel remained in the area for surveillance and assistance.
