Nepal Rescuers Find Two More Survivors 10 Days After Devastating Floods

Rescuers in Nepal pulled a Chinese national and a local woman alive from debris on Saturday, 10 days after devastating floods hit the country. The Chinese man was rescued from a 225-meter (738-foot) tunnel at the Trishuli hydropower project. Nepal's army said a joint rescue team of Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts evacuated the man by helicopter for a health assessment. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV released a photo showing two rescuers carrying the man out of the tunnel. The man, identified by authorities as Luhaitao, told an officer he repeatedly shouted when he saw rescue lights but was not heard. He is in stable condition at a hospital. Separately, a woman was rescued alive from her house in flood-hit Nuwakot town. Nepal's army spokesperson said she was airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. Images released by Nepal's army show rescuers finding the woman covered in mud, giving her bottled water before pulling her to safety. These rescues bring the total number of workers pulled alive from the Trishuli hydropower project to three, following the rescue of two Nepalese workers on Friday. The two Nepalese workers were identified as 45-year-old mechanical supervisor Kabir Maharjan and 30-year-old foreman Sanjay Sah. The August 26 floods, likely caused by a glacier collapse, killed at least 1,300 people, including 85 children, according to Nepal's disaster management agency and police. More than 5,000 people remain missing in Nepal, including 618 foreigners. Rescue efforts have increasingly focused on 12 hydropower projects across Nepal, where about 900 workers are missing and roughly 500 are believed to be trapped in various tunnels. Specialized rescue teams from India, China, South Korea, and the United States are searching through debris, damaged structures, and tunnels for survivors.
