Amazon Suspends Operations With Cargo Carrier 21 Air After Miami Crash
The Story
Amazon announced Sunday it has suspended its partnership with 21 Air, the cargo carrier whose plane careened off a Miami runway last week.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated the company decided to pause their operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598 after the tragic incident and a review of circumstances. A Boeing 767, operating as Flight 7598 for Amazon Air, overshot runway 30 at Miami International Airport on September 6, 2026, around 1:58 p.m. The plane traveled roughly 1,300 feet past the end of the runway, struck a van carrying workers at a plane cleaning company, and then another vehicle.
All five people in the van died: Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53; Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47. Five others were injured, with three remaining hospitalized, two in critical condition. The pilots, Joseph Carroll and Jaime Felipe Silva Molina, were released from the hospital. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash.
Flight information released by the NTSB on September 9 revealed one pilot warned the other about excessive speed during approach and after touchdown. Data from the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder showed the plane was unsteady and touched down well beyond the intended point on the runway. About 15 seconds after touchdown sounds, a pilot called for a go-around, and thrust increased consistent with this attempt, but throttles were then reduced, and brakes reapplied.
The speed brakes and thrust reversers were not deployed. 21 Air, headquartered in North Carolina, had flown packages for Amazon since 2024. Lawsuits alleging negligence by 21 Air, Amazon, and other parties have been prompted in Florida. The NTSB investigation continues, with a final report typically expected within one to two years.
