Florida State Representative Angie Nixon Wins Democratic Senate Primary

The Story

Florida state Representative Angie Nixon defeated Alex Vindman in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, securing 56 percent of the vote to Vindman's 44 percent. Nixon, a progressive and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, achieved this victory despite being dramatically outraised by Vindman, who collected $16.27 million compared to Nixon's nearly $975,000. Vindman, a former Director of European Affairs for the National Security Council, gained prominence as a witness in President Trump's first impeachment trial in 2019. Trump was acquitted of those charges by the Senate on February 5, 2020. Nixon will now face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in the November general election. Moody secured her party's nomination with 79.6 percent of the vote. Vindman conceded the race and stated he would support Nixon in the general election. President Trump, however, ridiculed Vindman's loss on Truth Social, calling him a "SleazeBag Vindman" and Nixon a "Radical Left Lunatic." Nixon's campaign focused on progressive policies such as Medicare for All, free childcare, paid family and sick leave, and a national rent freeze. She has represented parts of the Jacksonville area in the Florida statehouse since 2020 and was arrested in May for a sit-in at Governor Ron DeSantis' office over redrawn congressional maps. Nixon's win marks the first time a Democratic Socialists of America member has won a major-party nomination for statewide office. National Democrats are not optimistic about the odds of flipping Florida in the general election.
