US Marine Arrested for Alleged Murder of Woman in Okinawa Hotel
The Story
Japanese police arrested a 20-year-old US Marine on Sunday, October 4, 2026, on suspicion of robbing and murdering a woman in Okinawa.
Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, stationed at Futenma Air Station, is suspected of killing 39-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha, Okinawa’s capital city, in the early hours of Saturday. Police said Ballard allegedly took Yagi’s wallet and backpack. Yagi’s body was found in her hotel room and she appeared to have been strangled to death, according to Kyodo News agency, citing police.
Security camera footage reportedly showed a man believed to be the suspect entering the hotel with the victim and later leaving alone. An officer arrested Ballard after spotting him walking alone on a street in Naha’s entertainment district late Saturday. Ballard has denied the allegations, police said. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the incident as an extremely brutal and heinous crime and lodged a strong protest with the United States.
She urged the US to provide maximum cooperation with the investigation, enforce stricter discipline among military personnel, and take thorough measures to prevent recurrence. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi summoned US Ambassador George Glass to the ministry to discuss the incident. Okinawa Governor Genta Koja stated the case deals a major shock and adds fear to Okinawans, adding that discipline and troop education are not working at all.
The victim’s brother expressed deep sadness and devastation at the loss of their daughter. The US Marine Corps stated it is actively cooperating with Japanese authorities in response to allegations of serious criminal actions by a Marine. The Marine Corps added it takes these allegations seriously and expects every Marine to adhere to the highest standards of behavior.
The US Embassy in Tokyo confirmed its communication and cooperation with Japanese authorities, extending sincere condolences to the victim's family. Ambassador Glass also pledged full cooperation as the investigation continues. Okinawa hosts about half of the 50,000 US troops deployed in Japan, and Okinawans have long complained about noise, pollution, and crimes related to US bases.
