Secretary Rubio Delivers Athens Speech, Praises Greece, Signs Defense Pact
The Story
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s address in Athens on Wednesday, delivered in the shadow of the Acropolis, drew major international attention as he laid out his vision for the future of the West.
Rubio used the setting of the Acropolis and the legacy of ancient Athens to connect the foundations of American democracy with classical Greece. He urged Western nations to unapologetically prioritize their own interests and pursue national power, warning that Western civilization is at a crossroads between national power and decline. Rubio praised Greece as a model ally of the United States and called on Europe to awaken from its long slumber and rekindle the fire lit in ancient Greece.
He noted encouraging signs in Europe, including skyrocketing defense spending, new partnerships, and expanded manufacturing, following historic defense commitments at the NATO summit in The Hague last year. Rubio also witnessed the signing of a new defense cooperation agreement between the Hellenic Armed Forces and the Florida National Guard. During talks with Greek officials, including Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, Rubio discussed energy, defense, and cultural matters.
He also announced a joint agreement on information-sharing on drug trafficking and terrorism. Rubio suggested the United States would use diplomatic efforts to ease a dispute between Ankara and Athens over the planned Great Sea Interconnector, a multibillion-dollar undersea power cable project linking Greece, Cyprus, and eventually Israel. The Wall Street Journal described Rubio's Athens address as a compelling response to a crisis of confidence across the Western world, calling it the speech of the year.
The New York Times focused on Rubio’s call for Europe to awaken and argued he promoted a renewed emphasis on Western power. CNN interpreted the speech as a potential indication of how Rubio could position himself beyond the current Trump era. Rubio's European trip began in Iceland to push for greater U.S. influence in the Arctic.
