France will increase its funding and support to combat Ebola in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced on October 3 during a visit to Bunia.

France previously allocated €13.4 million (S$19.3 million) to the Ebola fight between January and July, and Barrot plans to propose additional humanitarian funding during upcoming French budget discussions. A national humanitarian conference in Paris on October 6 will address Ebola. The Ebola outbreak, declared in mid-May, has recorded at least 8,300 confirmed cases and 4,000 deaths, according to authorities.

The virus has spread to seven provinces, with Ituri remaining the epicenter. The UN expressed concern as the Kigonze displacement camp in Ituri Province, which housed around 19,000 people, emptied after security forces entered the site, with gunfire reported. An Ebola transit center at Kigonze, operated by International Medical Corps, was also destroyed by fire.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) warned against interpreting a recent decline in reported cases as evidence of the outbreak easing, citing insecurity that has disrupted surveillance in affected areas. Dr. Wessam Mankoula of Africa CDC stated that the outbreak is not yet under control.
