Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Kills 17 in Kyiv, Damages Hospital

A Russian missile and drone barrage killed at least 17 people and injured more than 40 in Kyiv and the surrounding region on Thursday, August 2026.

The attack began shortly after midnight and lasted nearly nine hours. The strikes damaged civilian infrastructure, including a school and a children's hospital. The upper floors of a nine-story apartment block were destroyed in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district, where the majority of the 15 deaths in the capital occurred. Emergency crews rescued 12 residents from the wreckage.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack caused extensive damage in three Kyiv districts: Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi. Kyiv authorities declared Friday, August 21, a day of mourning, flying flags at half-mast and canceling public entertainment events. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched dozens of missiles and 168 drones. Nearly 90% of the drones and most cruise missiles were downed.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine urgently needed more air-defense interceptors, including Patriot systems, capable of engaging ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy stated that a failure by Ukraine's allies to replenish its stock of air defense missiles was costing lives. Russian strikes also targeted the Black Sea region of Odesa. In Russia, authorities in Tatarstan said several people were injured and homes damaged in an Ukrainian drone attack, disrupting work at an industrial site.
